On Friday, March 6, 2020, Pittsboro made International news when it NCDHHS announced that someone here tested positive for COVID-19.
Apparently, a man visited Italy and was in a town with a widespread Coronavirus outbreak. Even though he was suffering from flu-like symptoms, when his fever broke he boarded an airplane and flew back to the United States.
The person, who has not been named, is supposedly under self-quarantine at their home in Chatham County. Who knows if they’ll stay there, after all, Italy is 4,711 miles from Pittsboro, and they already didn’t stay put once before. (That said, I do not know the circumstances. You or I may have done the same thing…)
At the moment, it is not clear if other residents of Chatham County have been infected.
The US Department of State has a travel advisory in place effective February 29 2020 for cities in Northern Italy. In case you weren’t aware, you should not be flying to Italy, or boarding airplanes if you have Caronavirus.
According to the News & Observer, the State of North Carolina is expecting a surge in the cases of infected people and has almost no Coronavairus testing kits available.
This person officially earned the Coronavirus adventurer meme:
